headshot_3David Bennett was elected Mayor of Hilton Head Island in November 2014 with a 65% margin in a runoff against the incumbant mayor Drew Laughlin. Bennett took office officially in December and because this is his first time ever serving in an elected position, he has been working tirelessly to get established and put into motion with other members of Town Council the initiatives that Island voters supported.

Mayor Bennett campaigned on a commitment that Town Government can do more to realize the potential of Hilton Head Island as a “great place to live” as well as a “great place to vacation.” He believes strongly that the community has suffered from a lack of overall vision and it needs to create new opportunities that can be shared by everyone.

Born in Indianapolis, Bennett was formerly a resident of Carmel, Indiana. He bought a vacation home on Hilton Head in 2003 and moved his family to the Island permanently in 2009. He and his wife Terri have three children, two teenage girls and a son age 10. He has a strong relationship with his church (Grace Community Church) and has been an active community volunteer including coaching duties with his son’s baseball and basketball teams. He also enjoys boating, golf and biking. He is a graduate of the University of Indiana and has had a successful career in commercial and residential land development. He was formerly Chairman of Hilton Head Island’s Planning Commission.
